Where can I get the best genealogy dna test?

Nedra Oltz: What is your purpose? There are 4 types of DNA that I know of and 3 that are being tested.Y & Mitochondrial are the most common being used. They both go back in a straight line unchanged. With each they can show you the origin of your nomadic ancestor going back thousands of years. However each come from only one person in each generation you go back. You have 32 great great great grandparents. If you are a male and could have both done by the time you got back to them, 30 of them would not be included in the results. Y & Mitochondrial are helpful for people in genealogy if they find someone with which they feel they share ancestry and if they both are tested and have exact matches, then they can share information. Each only shows you a minute part of your total ancestry. Also no DNA test will tell you who your specific ancestors are.The other DNA that is being used is Autosomal. You get Autosomal 50-50 from both parents but not always 25% from each of ! your 4 grandparents. The reason why what you inherited can be biased between grandmother and grandfather on both sides of the family. How you inherit any bias will not be how your siblings inherited it. An exception can be for identical twins. Autosomal is what they used to give you your overall ancestral background -what some call ethnicity testing. However, in the long run what they are doing is matching you with population samples in their database. So any accuracy or inaccuracy depends on what population samples they have and what they don't have. There has been a lot of hype on TV about DNA tests and they don't go into what the test cannot do.Maury Povich doesn't really know enough to question people about what they can or cannot do. He is usually interviewing someone who has had the test not one of the molecular biologist who are involved in DNA testing and studies. Here are some companieshttp://www.familytreedna.com/ They do both Y & Mitochondrial. Also they ! do Autosomal matching individuals in their data base with thei! r Family Finder test going back 5 generations.http://dnatribes.com/ They do Autosomal and will show you your top 20 matches in descending order including specific countries. They aren't saying you have ancestors in all those countries but you have matches. They will give you additional matches for additional fee. But what they do is match you with population samples in their data base. With both if you go under "Feedback" at the top there is a way you can email them and ask questions and both are prompt at replying. A person should always read everything they have and ask as many questions they have in advance.https://www.23andme.com/ They do a wide variety of testing. I have yet to find where you can contact them in advance....Show more
