Oswaldo Rayburn: My favorite poem overall is "Hope is the Thing with Feathers" by Emily Dickinson. I just like the way she paints an image of Hope as this little canary that "perches in the soul" and carries us through the darkest of times without ever asking anything in return. What have I learned about poetry? Well, I'm a natural-born poet. I've been doing it all my life, and I think the crux of what poetry is comes from the soul, not from the classroom. That being said, I took a poetry unit in High School, but cared nothing for it. All of those rhyming schemes and iambic pentameter and what not. I *do* know what those things are, but I don't use them. I think they just confine creativity instead of help to DEfine it.What have I learned about myself through poetry....I suppose, simply, that I am a beautiful person on the inside. And also, thanks to my evil English teacher, I've learned to never let someone's criticism stop you from doing what you love. Just beca! use your talent is not to the liking of one person, doesn't mean you should conform. Doesn't mean you should quite releasing those beautiful pieces of your soul onto the page, as poetry allows you to do.What do I like about poetry?! EVERYTHING!!! The flow, the lyricism, the beauty of it. The way people manage to put into so few words, what it takes many of us a LIFETIME to learn. Poetry brings me peace, and I can't help but love it :)...Show more
